Recent activities

Study on the inclusion of Youth in Mali's peace and reconciliation process and 
Facilitation of a civil society workshop on youth, peace and security in Bamako

From Mai to October 2022, the Amani Protection LAB conducted a stakeholder mapping, as well as an in-depth analysis of youth perceptions and recommendations on the Algiers Agreement of 2015. The study was funded by the Folke Bernadotte Academy and implemented in close coordination with national civil society actors and youth partners in Mali.

 

In October 2022, the Protection LAB facilitated a civil society workshop on youth, peace and security. Held in Bamako, jointly with UNDP, UNFPA and the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the workshop brought together civil society actors and youth leaders from Bamako, Mopti and Timbuktu.


United Nations Handbook on the protection of civilians in UN peacekeeping

In 2017-2020, the Protection LAB conducted field research in the DRC, Mali and Lebanon, consulted mission leaders and  staff at UNHQ as well as in all PoC-mandated peacekeeping operations, and drafted the first United Nations Handbook on the protection of civilians in UN peacekeeping.

Swedish VIKING exercise for peace operations

In 2017, the Protection LAB supported the development of protection injects and provided mentoring services at the Swedish VIKING exercise, the world’s largest international computer aided staff exercise on UN peacekeeping.

Development of the protection of civilians strategy of the Multinational Joint Taskforce (MNJTF), Tchad Lake Basin

In 2017, the Protection LAB support the development of the protection of civilian strategy of the Multinational Joint Taskforce, in partnership with UNOCHA. This effort was enabled by consultations held in N'djamena, Chad, with the MNJTF Chief of Staff and relevant staff officers at the Force HQ, but also through interviews with AU civilian staff attached to the Force, field commanders from each of the Force's Sectors (Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria) and a joint workshop organised with the members of the Protection Cluster in N'Djamena. The PoC strategy was later finalised and approved by the African Union.

2017 - Mentoring of the incoming Protection Adviser : support to the review of the Protection of Civilians strategy of the UN Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO)

2016 - Support to the development of a Protection of Civilians strategy for central Mali with the UN Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA)
