About Us

The Protection LAB is a French NGO dedicated to fostering peace and security, safeguarding civilians affected by conflict and the conservation of biodiversity. Our efforts encompass a range of activities, from public or confidential research studies, and evaluations to providing advice, mentorship, capacity building, training, and direct involvement in coordination, mediation or assistance projects.

Guided by our core values of humanity, impartiality, non-discrimination, diversity, integrity, gender equity as well as commitment to upholding the rule of law and the rights of all individuals, we strive to embody these principles in every facet of our work. Our approach emphasises local ownership, transparency, dialogue, coordination, cooperation and community-centric strategies.

We engage with a diversity of clients and partners, including international peace and security operations, national authorities (with a focus on defence and security forces), United Nations entities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society actors involved in peace, human rights and biodiversity conservation.

Our Story

Founded in 2005, the NGO SIP21 initially aimed to champion women's rights and enhance the capabilities of national civil society organizations in the Middle East.

In 2020, SIP21 underwent a name change to become the Amani Protection LAB, honouring the memory of the late Magistrate and Director of the National Judicial School (Ecole Nationale de la Magistrature) of Niger, Professor Amadou Amani. We then chose to focus our efforts on ensuring compliance with protection and human rights standards within peace operations as well as state defense and security forces, including the military, police, park rangers, and more.

Our Team

The Protection LAB mobilises a wide range of international experts from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, proficient in the protection of civilians in armed conflict - including on topics such as international human rights and humanitarian law, child protection, sexual and gender-based violence or forced migrations (internally displaced people and refugee protection). Our staff mainly has experience with humanitarian agencies, as well as regional and international peace and security operations.

As required, we mobilise and partner with national civil society actors and individual experts, including members of national institutions, military, police or ranger forces.
